The goal of Baccarat
In Baccarat, you (the player) and the dealer (the dealer) have the same goal. Your goal (and the dealer’s) is to get the total of a hand as close to 9 as possible.
You are not limited to betting on yourself to win. You can bet on yourself, the dealer or a draw. When you first learn how to play baccarat, remember that you are betting on the winner, not your own hand. If your hand doesn’t beat the dealer, you can still win if you place the right bet!
- Game Layout
The layout of Baccarat reflects the simplicity of the game itself. Player positions are numbered. In a physical casino, there are usually 12-14 positions. Online, you will usually see 5 positions. Sometimes, due to superstition, the number 4 is omitted, so that the player positions are 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. There are several betting areas for each player position. One is labelled “Player”, one is labelled “Banker” (or “Dealer”), and one is labelled “Tie “. These represent the different bets you can place in baccarat. Some Baccarat tables offer ‘Player Pair’ or ‘Banker Pair’ ” bets, indicated by the small circles marked accordingly. Select and place your bets
Place your bets before licensing. You can bet on the Player (your hand), the Banker (the dealer’s hand) or a draw. If you have a ‘Player Pair’ or ‘Banker Pair’ side bet on the table, you can also bet on either one. When you bet, you are betting on the winner of that hand. Once you have placed your bet, the hand begins. Check out our Baccarat Strategy Guide to help familiarise yourself with betting strategies.
How the rounds work
The first step in learning how to play baccarat on your own is to understand how a round is played. In a round (or “game”) of baccarat, the Player and the Banker each receive two cards and add them together to arrive at a total score. Remember, if the total is two digits, only the second digit is used.If your hand has a total of 8 or 9 points, this is called a ‘natural winner’ and the bet will be honoured. The same is true if the dealer’s hand totals 8 or 9.
How to know you’ve won
A baccarat hand ends in a win or a draw. When one player has an 8 or 9 and the other does not, the natural winner is the winner. If there is no natural winner, then the hand closest to a 9 is the winner. When a player and the dealer end the hand with the same total, there is a draw.Remember, you are betting on who will win. If you bet on the dealer to win, you will be able to cash your bet.
When you first learn how to play baccarat, this can be one of the more complicated ideas to understand. The point value of the first two cards in your hand determines whether you stand (meaning you don’t receive a third card). You can’t choose whether to stand or grab a card. This is always determined by the rules of the game.
- When a player is standing
The player always “plays” first. In other words, you will always stop or draw before it is the dealer’s turn. If your first two cards have a total of 6 or 7, then you stop. If the total is 8 or 9, you do not draw because it is a natural win. However, if you have a 6, 7, 8 or 9, the dealer will continue with his hand. - When the dealer stands up. The dealer stands on a 7, 8 or 9.
